Negative Influence Media Have On Adolescents

Abstract
The mass media have been playing a crucial role in providing message and knowledge for the public for a long time. Thanks to the new technology, the pervasion of information grows faster and faster. In order to catch audience’s mind and compete with other media business, companies of program producing try their best to make different kinds of shows or programs. Therefore, a lot of shows, advertisement and movies are filled with violence, sex scandals, sanguinary description and violation of personal privacy. Unfortunately, adolescents turned out to be the main group of victims. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the negative influences media have on adolescents.









Introduction
Learning is an important part of the socialization process, and Media serve as the main sources of information. All would agree that the media have powerful effects on both individuals and cultures. Because of the emergence of Media, we can communicate conveniently. Communication has always been essential to human survival. The Media offer a great number of topics to the masses ranging from politics to public affairs. Among all the media, TV acts as primary information sources for many age groups, especially children and teenagers. The popularity of television has never faded since it was invented. It now has become an indispensable part of modern life. No doubt, television has many positive effects. On the whole, it is education, instructive, and entertaining. However, television has its drawbacks, too. For example, once addicted to some fascinating programs, viewers may neglect their work. Besides, children and adults alike may imitate the unrealistic, destructive acts from the programs rife with violence and sex. Concerns relating to media exposure are most sensitive when children are involved. Because young children lack intellectual development, the exposure to the children may have greater influence than the parents do. This paper will focus on the advertisements, News coverage of suicide cases, animated cartoon, political call-in shows, movies and music on TV. Public concern over children’s exposure to violence and sex in the media is not new. Thus, the research will further explore other aspects of effects concerning social skills, academic achievement, antisocial behaviors and physical, emotional, and spiritual health. The scope of this research will be focused on the first and second year junior college students in Wenzao.



Literature Review
A lot of research is being done in the area of media. My search of the literature produced a great number of articles from library book and on-line research paper. In Story Mary and French Simone’s study, they examined the food advertising and marketing channels used to target children and adolescents in the US, and proposed the impact of food advertising on eating behavior. Hoagwood Kimberly and Erwin Holly D. Focuses on the research literature published since 1990 regarding the impact of media on the cognition and behavior of children and adolescents. It shows effect of prevalence of sex and violence in rock music and music videos on children and adolescents. McChesney Robert W. (2004) discusses the power of media, and the authors also highlight the core problems of the U.S. media system —inadequate journalism and hyper-commercialism. Wood W. and Wong FY provides a review of the experimental effects of media violence on viewers' aggression in unstructured social interaction. In the reviewed experiments, children or adolescents were exposed to violent or control presentations and their post exposure behavior was coded for aggression during spontaneous social interaction. John D.H. Downing (2004) offers a comprehensive review within five interconnected areas: humanistic and social scientific approaches; global and comparative perspectives; the relation of media to economy and power; media users; and elements in the media mosaic ranging from media ethics to advertising. DeFleur and Dennis (2002) discuss effect that the flow of information from media to audiences has on us. Media not only influences on our thoughts and behavior as individuals but modify our culture and society. In addition, Shirley Biagi (2005) points out intersection of media, business, technology, and social factors to give a compelling picture of mass media’s changing landscape to us.

Research Methodology
Participants
The participants in this research are 50 first and second year junior college students in Wenzao.
Instruments
The instruments used in this research are Acer Multi-Functional MP3/Storgage Drive and questionnaire
Data Collection
I would design and use questionnaires to collect students’ opinion of the issue. Moreover, I would seek the school’s permission for the access of the school database.
Data Analysis
Because I want to find out the influence media have on teenagers, I would initially sort out how many male and female students fill the questionnaire. Then I conduct analysis on the television and teenagers’ behaviors. After that, I interpret the connection between students’ way of lives and contents on TV. The next step is the examination of how mass media mislead the thinking and opinion of teenagers. Then, I would analyze the students’ ability to distinguish beneficial media from harmful media. In the final section, I will offer some possible solutions to the negative effects made by media
